You Mies’ed the Point

How now! The New York Times ran a story on the current fashion, amongst the NYC fashionable, of buying apartments with floor-to-ceiling glass.

But in citing the precedent, it did not trouble itself to mention that the trend actually began in the country—Plano, Illinois, that is—in 1951, with the vacation home of Miss Edith Farnsworth! One of my favorite pieces of architecture, and surely one of the most daring home designs ever:

  • All four sides are floor-to-ceiling glass. (Our city friends still have their hiding places.)
  • The fixtures and appliances are all hidden within a rich wood center structure. (No way to display that Sub-Zero refrigerator and Viking stove!)
  • It has a front porch for relaxing. (The New Yorkers probably have a concierge to relax for them.)

Better pictures, but no information, here.
