The latest trend in home furnishings is catering to the whims of my generation, which is apparently looking for quirky, modernish design and extremely low quality.
First, there was Ikea. But now there is a bevy of competitors: Muji (a Japanese company), West Elm (a Pottery Barn spinoff), and now CB2 (a Crate and Barrel subsidiary).
Warren Shoulberg, an industry expert, says of CB2: “Eventually they trade up. It’s still disposable, but at a higher price point.”
Wow, what could be better than that: disposable furniture at a non-disposable price point?!
