Tonight I saw a pickup truck drive by with a flag-draped cof­fin in the back. Painted on the side of the vehi­cle in large, crude let­ters was the mes­sage: “MY SON WAS KILLED IN IRAQ.”

A smaller sign in the win­dow read “DAD ON FIRE.”

It’s a pic­ture that won’t be easy to forget.
