For this week’s instal­la­tion of FTA, I would like to share with you a pic­ture of a tele­graph gauge that I found in the Chest­nut Hill high ser­vice pump­ing sta­tion in Jan­u­ary 2005, just before the his­toric build­ing was gut­ted by lux­ury con­do­minium devel­op­ers. The pic­ture is noth­ing spe­cial, but the gauge is. It remotely mon­i­tored and recorded the height of the Waban Hill Reser­voir in New­ton using only 19th cen­tury tech­nol­ogy. It is inter­est­ing to note that the gauge itself was built right in nearby Waltham, Massachusetts.
