For this week’s installation of FTA, I would like to share with you a picture of a telegraph gauge that I found in the Chestnut Hill high service pumping station in January 2005, just before the historic building was gutted by luxury condominium developers. The picture is nothing special, but the gauge is. It remotely monitored and recorded the height of the Waban Hill Reservoir in Newton using only 19th century technology. It is interesting to note that the gauge itself was built right in nearby Waltham, Massachusetts.
