Disappearing Opportunity Report

I found out today that WGBH is planning to leave its Western Ave. studios this year. They have long been cramped, but Harvard, which is planning a crazy expansion into Allston, is basically pulling the rug out from under them.

This is bad news for me because I (and probably only I) think that their main building is one of the masterpieces of the concrete medium. People say it’s “too 1960′s” but that is when it was built. The illuminated WGBH logo on the skywalk is also wonderful. The WGBH logo conjures up old memories of PBS in the 1980′s. I am not the only person to admire the “Scanimate look.”

I know I bring this up all the time, but I want to point out that prior to building its Western Ave. studios, WGBH was headquartered at 84 Mass Ave. in Cambridge. During its stay, it was rumored that the callsign stood for “God Bless Harvard.” You might recognize the terrifying structure which now occupies that prestigious address.
