The top story today in Boston: the record-low voter turnout at yesterday’s election. The newspaper goes on and on about what they call a “tide of apathy.”
I am infuriated. Why? Because the Monday and Tuesday editions of the Boston Globe said nothing—yes, nothing—about the elections. There were no voter guides, no speculation, no recommendations, and no discussion of the issues. And now, suddenly it’s big news that nobody cares. Any tide of apathy has the agenda-setters to blame: I’m talking about the media.
I wanted to vote this year. I spent an entire afternoon combing the media looking for clues. The Boston Election Department web site said that there would be a “municipal election” in my precinct, but failed to provide any details—no list of candidates or issues. The newspapers and Web were of no help. I’m not going to show up at the polling place if I’m not informed about anything. Imagine how the general public must feel if I am having trouble finding this kind of information.
